It is with profound sadness that I share the heartbreaking news that Maria Lefkow Sorensen, our beloved Executive Director at the Dewan Foundation, passed away this past Sunday of an apparent heart attack. Sue and I were devastated to learn of her passing.

Words cannot begin to capture the incredible spirit of Maria. She was smart, kind, compassionate, funny, and deeply committed—a true force for good in the world. Her love for the work of our foundation and its partners was unwavering, and her dedication to uplifting others inspired all of us. But above all, it was her love for her family that defined her. She passed, surrounded by love, while on vacation with her family at Disney World.

I loved Maria deeply. From the very beginning of our working relationship, we knew we shared the same core values—a belief in helping those in need, in empowering others to improve their lives, and in living with purpose beyond ourselves. Our conversations were filled with passion, joy, and laughter as we worked side by side to carry out the mission of the Foundation.

Maria’s absence will be deeply felt by all who had the honor of knowing her. Please keep her heartbroken family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We will share details about services as soon as they are available.
