2004 projects

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Take Me Out to the Ball Game is a Dewan Foundation project with the support of the Chicago White Sox.  The project has a number of closely related purposes including:

  • to provide youth who would not ordinarily have the opportunity, to go to a professional baseball game,

  • to reward academic achievement,

  • to encourage participation in extracurricular basic skills programs,

  • to support the educational efforts of schools and non-profit agencies serving youth from low income families.

For summer 2004, three organizations have participated in the project: Breakthrough Urban Ministries, Family Matters and Holy Trinity High School.

Reading Challenge Projects:

This project focuses on inner-city Catholic elementary schools and is intended to:

  • encourage reading,

  • provide a grant of between $1,000 and $1,500 for the purchase of library books or educational materials,

  • motivate students to work together in a team effort to access new resources for their school,

  • give students and teachers an opportunity to celebrate success in reading and recognize outstanding student achievement.

In 2004 the following schools have participated in the Reading Challenge: St. William School, Santa Maria Addolorata School and Visitation School.
